How Many Sheets of Drywall Do I Need?
Drywall is sold in 4-foot-wide sheets, typically 8 or 12 feet long. The math is straightforward, but there are a few tricks that save money and reduce seams.
The basic formula:
- Calculate wall area: perimeter × ceiling height. A 12×10 room with 8-foot ceilings has (12+10+12+10) × 8 = 352 square feet of wall.
- Subtract openings: a standard door is 21 sq ft, a window is about 15 sq ft. One door and one window = 36 sq ft. Net wall = 316 sq ft.
- Calculate ceiling area: length × width = 120 sq ft.
- Add 10% waste for cuts, mistakes, and repairs. Total = (316 + 120) × 1.1 = 480 sq ft.
- Divide by sheet size: 4×8 = 32 sq ft per sheet. 480 ÷ 32 = 15 sheets. Round up to 16 sheets.
But here is the pro trick: horizontal hanging. If your ceiling is 8 feet high, you can hang 4×12 sheets horizontally so the long edge runs along the ceiling line. This puts the factory-tapered edge (the beveled long edge) at the most visible seam, which is much easier to finish than a butt joint. It also means fewer seams overall. For a 12-foot-wide wall, one horizontal 4×12 sheet covers the entire width, eliminating the middle seam you would get with two vertical 4×8 sheets.
How Much Drywall Mud Do I Need?
Joint compound—commonly called "mud"—is the material that hides seams, covers screw holes, and creates smooth corners. Underestimating mud is a classic DIY mistake that leads to midnight runs to the hardware store.
The rule of thumb: 0.5 pounds of joint compound per square foot of drywall. This covers the first coat of taping and bedding. For a Level 5 finish (the smoothest, paint-ready surface), you need three coats, so triple the amount.

For a 12×12 room (about 576 sq ft of wall + ceiling), you need approximately 2–3 five-gallon buckets of all-purpose joint compound for a standard finish. If you are doing a Level 5 finish or have a lot of butt joints (non-tapered edges), buy 3–4 buckets.
Pro tip: buy one extra bucket. Leftover mud stores for months if sealed properly, and you will need it for nail pops, cracks, and touch-ups after the first coat of paint.
4×8 vs 4×12 Sheets: Which Should You Choose?
This is the first decision every drywall project faces, and the answer depends on your room size, skill level, and help available.
4×8 sheets (32 sq ft):
- Pros: Easy to handle alone, fits through standard doorways, fits in most pickup trucks, cheaper per sheet, widely available
- Cons: More seams to finish, more mud and tape needed, more labor overall
- Best for: Small rooms, DIYers working alone, rooms with lots of corners and obstacles, basements with tight staircases
4×12 sheets (48 sq ft):
- Pros: 50% more coverage per sheet, 33% fewer seams, faster installation with a crew, factory-tapered long edges create better joints
- Cons: Heavy (about 75–85 lbs for 1/2-inch), requires two people to hang safely, harder to maneuver in tight spaces, more expensive per sheet, may not fit in all vehicles
- Best for: Large open rooms, professional crews, ceilings (where seams are hardest to hide), rooms with 12-foot walls
My recommendation: if you have a helper and the room is larger than 10×12, use 4×12 sheets for the ceiling and any wall that is 12 feet or longer. Use 4×8 sheets for smaller walls, closets, and any area where maneuverability is tight. The time saved on finishing fewer seams is worth the extra handling effort.
How Many Screws Per Sheet of Drywall?
Screw spacing is critical. Too few screws and the drywall will sag, crack, or pop. Too many and you are wasting time and creating unnecessary holes to mud.
Standard spacing for 1/2-inch drywall:
- Walls: 32 screws per 4×8 sheet. Space screws 16 inches apart on studs, with screws along the perimeter every 8 inches.
- Ceilings: 36 screws per 4×8 sheet. Space screws 12 inches apart on joists because gravity is working against you.
- 4×12 sheets on walls: 48 screws. Same 16-inch spacing but more perimeter screws.
- 4×12 sheets on ceilings: 54 screws. 12-inch spacing on joists.
Screw length guidelines:
- 1/2-inch drywall on walls: 1-1/4 inch coarse-thread drywall screws
- 5/8-inch drywall or ceilings: 1-5/8 inch screws
- Double-layer applications (fire-rated or soundproof): 2-inch screws for the second layer
Never use nails for ceilings. Over time, gravity and vibration from walking upstairs will cause nail pops. Screws hold forever. For walls, nails are acceptable but screws are still preferred for a lasting job.
Drywall Cost Per Sheet (2026)
Drywall prices have been relatively stable compared to lumber, but they still vary by type, thickness, and location. Here is what you can expect to pay in 2026:
