How Many Tiles Do I Need?

Example: a 8×6 foot bathroom with 12×12 tiles. Room area = 48 sq ft. Tile area = 1 sq ft. Raw tiles = 48. Add 15% waste = 55.2 tiles. Round up to 56 tiles. If sold in boxes of 12, you need 5 boxes (60 tiles).
One critical detail: always measure in inches, not feet, for small rooms. An 8×6 foot bathroom is 96×72 inches. If you are using 12×12 tiles, you get exactly 8 tiles by 6 tiles = 48 tiles with zero cuts. But if the room is 97×73 inches, you need 9 tiles by 7 tiles = 63 tiles, and you will have a 1-inch sliver cut along one wall. That is why waste factors matter so much—small measurement errors create big tile needs.
How Much Tile Waste Should I Add?

One more consideration: sanded vs. unsanded grout. Use unsanded grout for joints under 1/8 inch (mosaics, tight subway tile). Use sanded grout for joints 1/8 inch and wider. What Size Tile Should I Use?
Tile size is both an aesthetic and practical decision. The wrong size can make a small room feel cramped or create an installation nightmare.

But if the room is 100 inches wide, 24-inch tiles require 4 full tiles plus a 4-inch sliver, which looks terrible. In that case, 12-inch or 18-inch tiles are better choices.
