How Many Fence Posts Do I Need?
The number of posts is the foundation of every fence estimate. Get it wrong and you will either run short mid-project or end up with a pile of expensive 4x4s in your garage.
The exact formula:
- Step 1: Measure the total linear footage of your fence line. Include all sides of the enclosed area.
- Step 2: Divide total length by your post spacing (6 or 8 feet for wood, 10 feet for chain link). This gives you the number of intervals.
- Step 3: Round up the number of intervals to the nearest whole number.
- Step 4: Add 1 for the starting post. Intervals + 1 = total posts.

How Much Concrete Per Fence Post?
Concrete is what keeps your fence upright through storms, kids climbing, and decades of freeze-thaw cycles. Skimping on concrete is the #1 reason fences lean within 5 years.
Concrete requirements by post size and hole depth:

How Far Apart Should Fence Posts Be?

How Deep Should Fence Posts Be?
The general rule is: bury 1/3 to 1/2 of the post's total length. But soil conditions, frost line, and fence height all affect the exact depth.
