How Much Flooring Do I Need?
Calculating flooring needs is straightforward, but the waste factor is where most people go wrong. Unlike paint, where a 10% buffer is generous, flooring waste can be 10–20% depending on the material, room shape, and layout pattern.
The exact formula:
- Step 1: Measure the room length and width in feet. Multiply to get square footage.

Round up to 9 bundles (198 sq ft). The extra 13 sq ft covers mistakes and provides 2–3 planks for future repairs.
How Much Flooring Waste Should I Add?
The waste factor is the most critical variable in flooring estimates. Unlike paint, where you can always buy another gallon, flooring comes in boxes and bundles, and you cannot buy 0.3 of a box. More importantly, dye lots vary between production runs, so a second order may not match the first.
Standard waste factors by material and layout:

- Laminate, complex room: 15% waste. Rooms with many corners, closets, and angles require more cuts and generate more scrap.
- Vinyl plank, straight layout: 10% waste. Vinyl is flexible and easy to cut, but thin planks are harder to reuse offcuts.
- Tile, straight layout: 15% waste. Tile is brittle and breaks easily. Even experienced tilers break 5–10% of tiles during cutting.
- Tile, diagonal or mosaic: 20% waste. Diagonal tile cuts waste half the tile. Mosaic sheets are hard to cut cleanly without waste.
- Small rooms (under 100 sq ft): Add 5% extra to any waste factor. Small rooms have fewer planks to absorb mistakes, and one bad cut can ruin your entire material plan.

Luxury Vinyl Plank (LVP)
- Pros: 100% waterproof—can be installed in bathrooms, kitchens, basements, and laundry rooms, softer and quieter underfoot, warmer than tile, easy to clean, resistant to stains and fading, can be installed over most existing floors
- Cons: Softer surface dents more easily under heavy furniture and pet claws, can be punctured by sharp objects, lower resale value than hardwood or laminate, thin planks (4–8mm) feel less substantial, some cheap products have off-gassing (VOC) issues
- Best for: Kitchens, bathrooms, basements, laundry rooms, and homes with young children or pets. Rental properties where durability and low maintenance matter more than resale value.
- Cost: $2–$7 per sq ft for materials. $1.50–$3.50 per sq ft for professional installation. Underlayment $0.20–$0.50 per sq ft (some LVP has built-in underlayment).
My recommendation: if you need waterproof performance, choose LVP. If you want the most wood-like feel and do not have moisture concerns, choose laminate. For most homeowners, LVP is the safer choice because kitchens and bathrooms are high-traffic areas where spills are inevitable.
Can I Install Flooring Over Existing Tile or Concrete?
Yes, but with important conditions. Installing over existing flooring saves time and money, but a bad subfloor will ruin even the best materials.
Installing over existing tile:
- Laminate and LVP can be installed over tile if the surface is flat, clean, and stable. The tile must not be loose or cracked.
- Grout lines must be filled with self-leveling compound or the planks will eventually telegraph (show the grout pattern) through the flooring.
- Tile height adds 3/8–1/2 inch to the floor level. Check door clearances, transition strips, and appliance heights before proceeding.
- Hardwood cannot be nailed over tile. Engineered hardwood can be glued over tile with a suitable adhesive, but this is not recommended because the tile surface is not porous and adhesion may fail.
Installing over concrete:
- Concrete must be cured for at least 60 days before installing any flooring. New concrete releases moisture that will destroy laminate and hardwood.
- Test concrete moisture with a calcium chloride test or relative humidity probe. Readings above 3 lbs/1000 sq ft/24 hours (calcium chloride) or 75% RH (in-situ probe) require a moisture barrier.
- Concrete must be level within 3/16 inch over 10 feet. Use self-leveling compound for low spots. Grind down high spots.
- Solid hardwood cannot be nailed directly to concrete. Use engineered hardwood with a moisture barrier, or install a plywood subfloor over sleepers (expensive and reduces ceiling height).
- Laminate and LVP can be installed over concrete with a vapor barrier underlayment. Some LVP products have an attached cork or foam underlayment with a built-in vapor barrier.
Always follow the flooring manufacturer's installation guidelines. Violating these guidelines voids your warranty and can lead to buckling, gaps, and moisture damage that costs thousands to repair.
